"
this equisite corridor of tinted mountains and radiant water
here and nowhere else is the vestibule between the Levant
and the Tropics "
E. M. FOSTER about the Gulf of Suez, 1923
The Egyptian coasts of the Red Sea stretch
from Suez to the Sudanese boarders. These mineral ranges of
mountains inspired the seamen from Antiquity: they named this
stretch of sea Mare Rostrum (Red Sea).
Nowadays the steep oriental desert wadis
have stayed relatively unexplored, giving shelter only to
groups of ibex and gazelle. Aside from these arid and empty
stretches, the Red Sea coasts offer us beautiful coral reefs
and a rich marine life. The ancient ports there are a testimony
of the intense maritime activity which has modelled the history
of the region since the Pharaos.
Numerous boats have navigated the
Red Sea waters since Phenician and Egyptian traders started
to use this route to go to India. In those times, boats were
carrying cargo of copper, ceramics and fabrics from El-Quseir
and Berenice, later returning with cargo of precious stones,
spices, ebony and even sometimes elephants. As the centuries
passed, the Red Sea was witness to thousands of wrecks and
the never ending passage of smugglers, traders, pirates and
pilgrims.

" The magical ballet
of the reefs is endless...each night, following the same rhythm,
among the deafening silence of thousands of the deep ocean
sounds."
David Douhilet, The Red Sea
