Brothers
The Brothers Islands (Al
Akhawein Islands) are situated 67 km offshore east
of El Quseir and south East of Safaga. The smaller island
covers an area of 0.1 square km, while the other one covers
0.3 square km. A great situation to meet pelagic and big fishes!
The breathtaking underwater
scenery stands in extreme contrast to the bare rocks on the
islands. Due to the far offshore location rough seas can be
encountered. Once you mastered this incredible diving is your
reward!
The 2 Islands are only 1 km apart. Together
they offer more than 12 different dive sites.
The dive sites are mostly wall
dives and strong drop offs. Big Brother have on the North
west side some ship wrecks. The Aida II an Italian ship which
was carrying troops one night in 1957 when it hit Big Brother.
A large wreck with much intact superstructure, its shallowest
point is at 15 m. and ends below 45m. There are other older
wrecks scattered at depths between 9 and 40 meters The famouse
Numidia is to find in the Northern tip of the Island. Often
there is a strong current running straight onto the wreck.
The wreck starts at a depth of 8m, she lies on the steep drop-off
at an almost vertical angle and the soft coral covers it nicley
until 55m. The stern is raised and provides a nice rounded
poop deck below which the large propeller is found at a depth
of about 80m. Experienced technical divers who'd like to dive
the stern should have a good plan for the decompression stop
as the current can be strong in this area!
Abrupt wall of soft corals
drops to 40m, where you hit a short plateau. Over the edge
of the plateau another wall descends even further. An excellent
dive where you might see hammerhead sharks; white tip oceanic
sharks (carcharhinus longimanus) schools of jack fishes, big
groupers etc.
